For stocks: passing the Canadian Securities Course, Conduct and Practices Handbook Exam and for futures’ trading the Derivatives Fundamentals Course, Futures Licensing Course and in addition if you want to trade equity options; the Options Licensing course. These are offered at the Canadian Securities Institute. The names may have changed as well as the formats…so check with the CSI. Then you need to get a job with a ‘Registrant’ i.e. a brokerage licensed by the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada. Some new wrinkes may have been added over the years but in addition to the course and employment with a ‘Registrant’ company you will need to file a document called an I-U-2000 or Form 4 (it may have changed in the last couple of years.) It is effectively a police background check going back 10 years.
